At Nona’s Auto Center in Turlock, we repair over 40 different makes of automobile. But one niche of the market we’re in seems to have a lot of love from our customers, and that’s Asian vehicles (Acura, Daewoo, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Isuzu, Lexus, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota).
This month, we thought we’d take a look at Asian vehicles and ask, why are they so popular in the U.S. and in California? Here’s five guesses:
- They’ve got style. Asian vehicles are not a very hard sell. They’re just plain sexy. Even their utility vehicles feel more stylized and interesting to drive. It’s a small wonder that their affordable compacts often wind up as street racers when better engines are available. Asian cars look like racers and feel like them, too.
- They're practical, efficient, dependable cars. We’re looking at Honda really intently here. People seem to love Honda cars and trust them to come through in a clinch. Others swear by Nissan, or Mazda. Asian cars are historically fuel efficient, practical to drive, and come through when you need them.
- Many of them are American born and built! Honda manufactures models right here in the U.S., making most of the Honda’s on our roads a product of American labor. It’s highly sobering that most Fords can’t even claim that these days.
- They’re for the whole family. Asian produces many vehicles for family transport: minivans, SUVs, and larger sedans. And, properly maintained, these cars make great legacies when the kids grow up and move on to college.

Speaking of your next visit, if you haven’t replaced your cabin and engine air filters, don’t forget to book in for that, and soon. Since the fires around California have created lots of ash, please be aware that your car’s cabin and engine air filters will need to be changed sooner than expected due to the ashes clogging them up.
